Troubled Heart
Echoes of a Torn Homeland is a black-and-white photographic essay by Michel Soares, created from a re-photographed Brazil vs Japan television broadcast. The project explores football, distance, memory, belonging, and the fractured image of a homeland.
The Man in the Black Suit
Standing at the edge of the match, a man in a black suit embodies command, silence, and tension. His presence shifts the game into a symbolic field of decision, authority, and the invisible weight of a nation in dispute.
A Gesture of Authority
A referee raises a card during the match, interrupting the flow of the game with a gesture of control, judgment, and consequence. In the mediated image, football becomes not only movement and emotion, but also rule, tension, and rupture.
Bent Body
The bent body concentrates the physical and emotional fall of a match seen through the screen.
Face in water
The tension of the match gathers on the face of a Japanese player. Between reflections, noise, and screen distortions, the game ceases to be only movement and begins to reveal a psychological state of waiting, pressure, and uncertainty.

Brazil appears as a concentrated body: a collective symbol, displaced affection, and an unstable image.
Collective Reflection
The crowd appears doubled and unstable, as if emotion itself were reflected on the surface of the screen.

Attentive faces form a silent chorus before uncertainty, defeat, and endurance.
The Fall
In the fallen body, football ceases to be movement and becomes fracture, exhaustion, and consequence.
